Why Spanish verbs are irregular

Spanish irregular verbs are not random. Many of them belong to patterns that repeat across common verbs. The goal of this page is not to memorize every form at once, but to practice the patterns that explain the most useful irregular verbs.

Present-tense irregular patterns

Irregular yo forms

Several verbs share an irregular -go yo form. Some, such as tener and venir, also have stem changes in other forms.

Stem-changing verbs

Stem-changing verbs change inside the stem, usually outside nosotros/as: quiero, puedo, and pido.

Fully irregular verbs

Ser and ir are high-frequency verbs that need direct practice because their forms do not fit one simple regular pattern.

Irregular preterite patterns

Irregular preterite verbs often use special stems: tuv-, hic-/hiz-, dij-, vin-, and pud-. These forms normally do not use accent marks: tuve, hizo, dijeron, vino, and pude.

Irregular future and conditional stems

The future and conditional share irregular stems. Practice tendr-, vendr-, podr-, har-, dir-, querr-, and sabr-: tendré, vendría, podrás, haría, dirán, querríamos, and sabría.

Irregular participles and gerunds

Common irregular participles include hecho, dicho, and visto. Useful irregular gerunds include yendo and diciendo.

1. Start with one pattern, not one tense.
2. Practice five high-frequency verbs in short rounds.
3. Review mistakes immediately before adding more verbs.
4. Mix present, preterite, future, and conditional only after the pattern feels familiar.

Common irregular verb mistakes

• Writing hico instead of hizo.
• Writing dijieron instead of dijeron.
• Writing hacido instead of hecho.
• Adding accents incorrectly to tuve or dijo.
• Thinking an irregular verb changes in every single form.
• Confusing the preterite forms of ser and ir; both use fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, and fueron.
