Ser in the Spanish present tense
Ser usually translates as to be, but it is not interchangeable with estar. Its six present forms are highly irregular and must be learned as a complete pattern.
Use ser to identify, classify and describe what a person, thing or event is.
Present forms of ser
Learn soy, eres, es, somos, sois and son as one system. The subject determines the form, although Spanish often omits the subject pronoun.
1. Identity, professions and roles
Use ser to identify people and things and to state professions or roles. Spanish normally omits the indefinite article before an unmodified profession.
2. Origin, nationality and relationships
Use ser + de for origin and ser with nationality adjectives. Adjectives agree with the subject. Ser also expresses family and social relationships.
3. Characteristics
Use ser for characteristics that identify or describe what someone or something is like. Permanent versus temporary is not a reliable rule.
4. Time and date
Use es for one o'clock and son for other clock times. Use ser for days and dates.
5. Material and possession
Use ser de to identify material or ownership.
6. Events and location
Use ser to say where or when an event takes place. Use estar for the physical location of a person or object.
7. Ser versus estar
Ser identifies or classifies; estar locates or describes a state or condition.
8. Subject pronouns
The verb form often identifies the subject, so Soy paciente and Yo soy paciente are both correct.
9. Common mistakes
Yo requires soy.
Tú requires eres.
Nosotros requires somos.
Use ser for where an event takes place.
10. A reliable method
- Identify what the sentence is doing: identity, classification, origin, time, material, possession or event.
- Identify the subject.
- Choose soy, eres, es, somos, sois or son.
- Check adjective agreement and the complete meaning.
