1. What is the Spanish present tense used for?
Habits and routines

Use the present for actions that happen regularly.

Trabajo de lunes a viernes.I work from Monday to Friday.
Estudiamos español por la noche. We study Spanish at night.
Ella camina al trabajo todos los días.She walks to work every day.
Current situations

Use it for situations that are true now, even when the action is not happening at this exact second.

Trabajo en un hospital.I work in a hospital.
Necesito ayuda.I need help.
Hablamos español en casa.We speak Spanish at home.
General facts

The present also describes facts and things that are generally true.

La clase dura una hora. The class lasts one hour.
Muchas personas trabajan desde casa. Many people work from home.
Actions happening now

Spanish can use the simple present for an action happening now when the context is clear. The progressive emphasizes that it is in progress at this exact moment.

Ahora preparo la cena.I am preparing dinner now.
Escucho un mensaje de voz.I am listening to a voice message.
Near-future plans

A clear future time expression can give the present tense a planned future meaning.

Mañana viajamos a París.We are traveling to Paris tomorrow.
El sábado visitamos a nuestros abuelos. We are visiting our grandparents on Saturday.
2. How do you form a regular -AR verb?

An infinitive has a stem and an infinitive ending. Remove -ar, keep the stem and add the ending that matches the subject.

trabajar→trabaj-→trabajo
  1. Identify who performs the action.
  2. Remove -ar.
  3. Add the ending for the subject.
  4. Read the complete sentence again.
3. The six present-tense endings
SubjectEndinghablar
yo-ohablo
tú-ashablas
él, ella, usted-ahabla
nosotros, nosotras-amoshablamos
vosotros, vosotras-áishabláis
ellos, ellas, ustedes-anhablan

Memory pattern: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an

4. Complete example: trabajar
yotrabajo
tútrabajas
él / ella / ustedtrabaja
nosotros / nosotrastrabajamos
vosotros / vosotrastrabajáis
ellos / ellas / ustedestrabajan
5. Spanish often omits the subject pronoun

Spanish verb endings usually indicate who performs the action, so the pronoun is often optional.

Yo trabajo desde casa.Trabajo desde casa.
Nosotros estudiamos por la noche.Estudiamos por la noche.

Include a pronoun when it clarifies or emphasizes the person, creates a contrast or helps teach the pattern: Yo trabajo por la mañana, pero ella trabaja por la tarde.

6. Names and groups also determine the conjugation
7. Negative sentences

Put no directly before the conjugated verb. The ending does not change.

No trabajo los sábados.I do not work on Saturdays.
Ella no cocina en casa. She does not cook at home.
Ustedes no necesitan ayuda. You all do not need help.
8. Questions in the present tense

Spanish does not need an auxiliary equivalent to English do or does. Form the question directly with the conjugated verb.

¿Trabajas aquí?Do you work here?
¿Ella estudia español?Does she study Spanish?
¿Ustedes necesitan ayuda?Do you all need help?

You can also ask ¿Dónde trabajas?, ¿Cuándo estudias?, ¿A qué hora terminas?, ¿Por qué caminas al trabajo? or ¿Con quién practicas español?.

Remember both question marks: ¿Trabajas aquí?

9. Useful time expressions
todos los días — every daycada mañana — every morningpor la tarde — in the afternoonpor la noche — at nightlos fines de semana — on weekendsde lunes a viernes — from Monday to Fridaydespués del trabajo — after workantes de la clase — before classnormalmente — normallysiempre — alwaysnunca — nevera veces — sometimes

The time expression does not determine the ending. The subject still determines the conjugation.

10. Common mistakes
Yo trabajar en casa.Yo trabajo en casa.

The infinitive must be conjugated.

Usted trabajas aquí.Usted trabaja aquí.

Usted uses the same -a form as él and ella.

Ana y Marta estudia español.Ana y Marta estudian español.

Two people require the plural ending -an.

Nosotros hablan español.Nosotros hablamos español.

Nosotros and nosotras use -amos.

Vosotros practicais español.Vosotros practicáis español.

The ending -áis requires a written accent.

¿Haces tú trabajar aquí?¿Trabajas aquí?

Spanish forms this question directly with the conjugated verb.
