Present tense: E → IE stem-changing verbs
In selected verbs, a stressed e in the stem changes to ie in the present tense. The personal ending still comes from the verb's -AR, -ER or -IR family.
The change appears with yo, tú, él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas and ustedes, but not with nosotros, nosotras, vosotros or vosotras.
1. The E → IE boot pattern
Change the stressed e to ie inside the boot forms. Keep the original e with nosotros and vosotros, then add the ending required by the infinitive family.
2. The stem changes; the ending still agrees
The changed stem does not replace the person ending. Use -AR endings with pensar, -ER endings with entender and -IR endings with preferir.
3. Useful structures
Learn the verb together with the structure that follows it.
4. Not every e changes
E → IE is a property of specific verbs, not a rule for every verb containing e. Beber, aprender, vender and responder remain regular. In verbs with more than one e, only the target stem vowel changes.
5. Contrasts with other patterns
Do not confuse E → IE with E → I or O → UE. Pedir becomes pido, not piedo; poder becomes puedo; pensar becomes pienso. Tener and venir combine a yo-go form with an E → IE change in other stressed forms.
6. Subjects, negatives and questions
Names and noun groups determine the person. Pronouns can be omitted when context is clear. Put no before the conjugated verb and form questions directly.
6. Common mistakes
The stressed e changes to ie.
Nosotros stays outside the boot.
Vosotros keeps the unchanged stem and the -éis ending.
Use the present-indicative -ER ending.
Empezar takes a before an infinitive.
7. A reliable method
- Confirm that the verb belongs to the E → IE group.
- Identify the subject.
- Change e to ie only in a boot person.
- Keep the correct -AR, -ER or -IR ending.
- Check the required structure or preposition.
